Yesterday i came across an article on Bellanaija about the Beauty Queen Sylvia Nduka living a jet set life. There where also pictures of her in private jets and in front of the Burj Al Arab. Some of the comments on that article was quite disturbing. In Nigeria we are now completely immersed the "aristo"/ sugar daddy phenomenon that any unmarried lady who seems to live in any obvious comfort must have a sugar daddy somewhere.
I am not denying that there aren't ladies who date rich married men for money. But for heavens sake not every girls has a sugar daddy. I used to have to have that mentality because of what i had seen in my uni days. But i had to consciously make myself start thinking in a different way. Because i have seen girls who do not even know what its like to receive a gift from a man because every thing they have either mom or dad gave them or they earned it themselves.
One commenter on the article said and i quote
"Nice! Glad she’s enterprising, nothing beats a steady source of income. But not to be misunderstood, I’m happy she’s living ‘la vida Sylvia’ but d question is with whom? Someone’s hubby? I didn’t expect to see some of those pics on BN…Does she own a pj? No. Can She take herself to Burj Al Arab? Erm…don’t think so. We all know how these things work, beauty queen or not."
It is ignorance that makes people talk and think like this. Whether people choose to believe it or not, there are extremely filthy rich unmarried men in Nigeria who are not into politics. And if they are generous enough to shower their girlfriends with gifts people who do not know the whole story should not accuse them of having sugar daddies.
It is assumed in our culture that for a man to attain some level of wealth he MUST be married. SAYS WHO? I cant think of any other reason why people would slander girls like that except jealousy. An actress buys a SUV....she is sleeping with a governor or senator. We women should start giving ourselves a little bit of credit and stop helping the financially frustrated men in Nigeria spread their vileness.
She got a promotion....ahhh she must be sleeping with her boss. thats what all those late nights must mean......abeg abeg make i hear word.

ReplyDeleteIt is just funny how people say that all the time about any successful lady. There must be a married man/sugar daddy/aristo behind it all. There are men too who just give gifts to women without even asking them to go out with them. That's Naija for you though. Lol.
